Benefits of Surgery

Surgery is the Most Effective Treatment for Obesity

Per ASMBS, many patients with obesity have tried to diet and exercise to treat their obesity on their own.  While some have short-term success, patients often have little to no success with diet and exercise alone and fail to meet their goals.  This is not a result of a lack of willpower or the wrong diet. Obesity is a complicated disease, and when a patient has a body mass index (BMI) greater than 35, a person's chance of reaching an average body weight for a lasting time is less than 1%. That’s why surgery should be considered for patients with severe obesity.

Long Term Weight Loss

Around 90% of patients after bariatric surgery lose 50% of excess body weight and keep this extra weight off long-term.  Patients must make a commitment to a healthy diet and exercise goals to avoid weight regain.

Improved Chronic Diseases

Metabolic/bariatric surgery is the most effective and long-lasting treatment for severe obesity resulting in significant weight loss and the improvement, prevention or resolution of many related diseases including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, sleep apnea and certain cancers.

Improved Quality of Life

When patients lose weight after surgery, they also feel more energetic, have less pain, and are more enthusiastic about doing things they have not done for years!

Longer Life

In large scientific studies of hundreds of thousands of patients, weight loss surgery has been shown to lower a person’s risk of death from any cause by over 40 percent.
