Q: Why isn’t diet pop allowed after bariatric surgery?
A: Carbonated beverages, including diet pop, are not recommended. In the first
3 months after surgery, the pressure from carbonation could cause a leak. The
carbonation also takes up space in your small pouch. This space needs to be
filled with protein rather than bubbles.
Q: I am 3 months out from surgery. I know I’m not supposed to eat bread and crackers
yet, but I’ve cheated and tolerated them just fine.
A: Tolerating a food doesn’t mean it’s a good choice. Success comes from
following the diet phase you are in.
Q: My stomach is upset - can I eat mashed potatoes and saltines to settle it?
A: Mashed potatoes and saltines are never good choices to settle your stomach.
These foods are higher calorie, low nutrient choices that can slow weight loss.
Q: Why should I wait until at least 8 weeks post-op to eat fruits and veggies? I thought
that they are good for me.
A: Fruits and veggies are good choices once you can consume primarily solid
proteins. Eating them too early doesn’t always leave enough room to meet
protein needs. Patients typically have room for both protein and veggies or
fruits about 2-3 months after surgery.
Q: I’m 2 weeks post-op and I feel great. Even though I was told to wait until 3 weeks to
start eating, can I start now since I feel like I can?
A: No. Eating too soon can do damage to the pouch or stomach. The surgical
area needs time to heal and liquid nutrition helps do this.
